Ethical & Social Challenges Facing Big Data
Hi everyone, this week I had a look at some ethical and social challenges surrounding 'Big Data'. It surprised me how many of these challenges exist and the impact! I have summarised below some of my interesting findings.
A website I found useful was: Ethical challenges If you would like to take a look.
Some ethical challenges I found:
- Privacy may be protected by minimising the amount of data gathered. To protect data privacy, it is also suggested to modify data in a way that makes it less revealing and to control access to data.
- Users must provide their consent after being fully informed about the planned uses of their data, both now and in the future. This might spare both businesses and consumers the shame of innocently providing their contact information only to be subjects of unwanted marketing efforts.
- A lack of words for de-identification that could aid in masking or removing any information that could identify a person.
- One of the main was Data Privacy such as fraud, identity theft, discrimination and more as a result of sharing their personal information.
- In machine learning, so-called data bias may result in injustice and prejudice.
- Customer data makes up the majority of pertinent data for many businesses. Furthermore, there is disagreement on whether or not aggregation and extrapolation are permitted, despite the likelihood of these happening. Another issue that organisations must deal with is the variety of data protection laws that exist in the various nations where they do business.
- Is it possible for competitors to obtain data and utilise it improperly? The majority of CSOs are cautious about transferring data to an external platform since the competition is fierce.
Is there any other points I have missed, let me know in the comments! 😀😀
